MERCEDES-BENZ has revealed details of two new V6 and V8 petrol engines, both utilising direct injection and multi-spark ignition technology to bring greater torque and fuel economy than their predecessors. Both engines feature piezo-electric injectors similar to those of most new diesel engines, the resultant cooling effect allowing for higher compression and boost for the twin-turbo V8 engine.

VOLKSWAGEN has revealed its new 1.2 litre three-cylinder TDI diesel engine, based on the direct-injected architecture of its larger 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre engines. Set to power the Polo BlueMotion, the 1.2 TDI produces 55kW and 180Nm of torque - only just shy of the four-cylinder Ford Fiesta ECOnetic's 66kW and 220Nm of torque. The new engine is still undergoing fuel consumption tests, but Volkswagen expects the small diesel to be rated at around 3.2 l/100km

BMW HAS CONFIRMED at this week's Beijing Motor Show that it will build its first production electric vehicle at its plant in Leipzig, Germany, with a 2013 debut planned. The Megacity EV will be sold under a new brand, opening the door to a full range of electrified BMWs. Based on the same technology featured in its recent BMW ActiveE concept, the Megacity EV is expected to feature a synchronous electric motor located in the rear axle, producing around 125kW and 250Nm of torque.
